How to Declutter Your Closet and figure out what Articles in your Wardrobe you actually want to wear

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

As the season changes, I find that this is the perfect time to take a look at what I own, how my style has evolved, and what I think I might actually wear. If your closet is fuller than it should be it might be time to evaluate what you have and determine your true style while decluttering your closet.

The reverse hanger trick is a super simple and effective way to keep track of what items are actually getting worn and loved while just going about your everyday life.

How it Works

To start, take everything out of your closet. Use the suggestions from my previous post to immediately eliminate anything you know you have moved on from.

Next, place everything that remains back in your closet BUT with the hanger facing the wrong way. After your wear an article, return it with the hanger facing the correct way. Over time, you will be able to discover which items in your wardrobe you are reaching for and which ones are never your first pick.

A Guide Help you Declutter

When you discover an item that is not getting worn, it is then time to determine WHY.

If it is because it needs a repair, make it a priority to mend. Check out my many Clothing Care how-to's for help!

If it is because it no longer fits, make it a goal to find something similar in a size that makes you feel good. Use the search function on online marketplaces to find it secondhand or manifest finding it at a thrift store!

If it is because it is only nostalgic or no longer brings joy, use the Konmari method to thank it for all the memories. and let it go. This way you can feel good about moving on from it.

If it is because you paid a lot of money for it and don't want to just "throw away the investment" consider reselling. Check out my Beginner's Guide to Reselling for helpful tips.

If it is because your style preferences have changed, embrace the change and set goals for yourself to rediscover your personal style. Use these tips to help you find your personal style.

I do this almost every time the season changes and have found the hanger trick and this thought process very useful. This method is especially helpful for anyone who has a hard time letting go and for those of us who tend to keep "just in case items." Over time it can help you build a timeless wardrobe of core essentials and versatile pieces perfect for creating looks that express your style in a more sustainable way .
